The Retreat | Reefton

Visitor Testimonial

The Retreat on Grey Road is in a prime location with picture windows opening straight down onto the winding Inangahua River and valley, to the Paparoa Ranges’ mountain vista beyond. The house is a haven tucked into the hillside with just a short walk into town over the bridge. There are places to store bikes out of the rain, plenty of room to hang wet gear, a full kitchen, heating, and superb bedrooms.

Ben and Tara are your hosts, with Ben arguably the one of the most knowledgeable motorbike guys in the South Island. Ben edits and publishes Kiwi Rider magazine and his knowledge of incredible roads radiating in all directions is encyclopaedic. Highways, back roads, gravel routes and tracks, Ben has investigated hundreds of loops and runs and routes throughout the south.

As both a destination, and a base for touring, Reefton is perfectly placed for the entire West Coast, Buller, Murchison, North Canterbury and Marlborough regions. Reefton itself is experiencing a quiet revolution, with numbers of clever folk discovering its charms, excellent cafes, bars, pizza, restaurants, and hotels.

It is a MUST on any South Island tour.”

Rates: $80 per rider or $150 per couple

MEET YOUR HOSTS

Ben & Tara

Ben and his partner Tara love living in Reefton and are happy to share the best bits of the top of the West Coast.  Ben lives, breathes and works all things bike and has many stories to tell (after all, he is the Editor of the fabulous Kiwi Rider magazine).

After a lifetime of different riding, he now spends most of his time adventure riding and loves to explore off the beaten track at every opportunity.  So, if you are looking for the best routes in and around the West Coast, Ben is the person to share those with you, whether it be off-road, gravel or seal.  He may even take a day out and be your guide for the day.

The Riding - Testimonial

I arrived at Reefton from Hokitika, and Ben gave me a REVER route to follow: It was a sensational ride. First through winding beechforest-lined alleyways on swift flowing tarmac to Springs Junction, left, and quick squirt down Maruia West Bank Road for a brief taste of gravel and the delight of winding up into the foothills of the Shenandoah Valley. Out to the Shenandoah Highway and then right onto Maruia Saddle Road, the most glorious gravel section, then 3km up on to the top of the Maruia Saddle, following on through tiny, trouble-free creek crossings, deep bush and native forestry.

Simply glorious runs and zigzags to the top and then down the other side for 7km of winding bush wonderland. The road comes down to the back of the Murchison Valley on long, fabulous gravel runs, eventually giving way to narrow tarmac lanes into Murchison, (coffee at Rivers Cafe if you want). From there I wound along the mighty Buller River, to Inangahua Junction, left, and then a swift smooth run through rolling mountain view country to Reefton. Approx 200km. About 3 hours. 5 Stars.
